Fantasy Vs. Reality

A recent trend among sexual internet predators is the usage of fake pictures and webcam video to pose as underage boys or girls, in order to lure other underage youth into showing nudity on webcam.

If someone online shows you a picture, or displays their webcam to you, it doesn't mean they are who you see in the picture or webcam. Sometimes this could be another teen who is posing as someone else or even an adult pretending to be a teen. Internet predators are known to have setup elaborate MySpace and Facebook accounts with a whole series of pictures who have been stolen from somebody else. If somebody is not willing to go on webcam for you, especially after showing you a picture, there is a high chance that person could be fake.

Internet predators have been known to steal "cam 2 cam" video chats they engaged in on a messenger such as MSN, or Skype and record the other person doing certain actions on webcam, so they can play it back to you and trick you into thinking they are someone they really are not. There are many free widely available programs on the web which allow you to display a video as your webcam stream, on any video chat program or website. This makes video chatting especially dangerous for those who are unaware such software exists.

Seeing interaction is very important when it comes to recognizing a fake. If there is no interaction, it is most likely a recording. If the other person has a microphone and is talking, but the video is not in sync with their voice you probably would assume it is a recording. However most fakes are clever and simply tell you they don't have a microphone. Simply asking the other person to wave their hand should be enough interaction to prove they are real, but to be 100% sure you can use some of the tips below.

How to tell a fake on cam

  • Ask the person on cam to write your name or the date on a piece of paper and hold it up to the webcam.
  • Since many times predators have pre-recorded actions in their videos, make a unique request where they would have to use more than one body part or use an object in their surroundings. If they give you an excuse they are most likely fake.
  • If the person you are video chatting with has a microphone but the audio does not considerably match up with the video they could be a fake.
  • Many times fakes will simply tell you they do not have a webcam or more commonly that their webcam was taken away by a parent.

Remember even real people can't always be trusted many times younger guys who are cappers use their webcams to seduce girls for one-on-one and then share the videos with whoever is in their circle of friends

Stay skeptical and avoid being a victim. There are many fakes both boys and girls, and you won't always be able to recognize them. So be careful!
